A reader who came here looking to spend.

Yelp readers compare. Google readers search. OCE readers come here ready to choose. Our readers are locals and frequent visitors who treat us like a recommendation from a friend who lives here.

Why we exist

Yelp answers questions. We answer wishes.

The internet is full of places to find a business. There are very few places to find the right one. We built OCE to be the second kind.

No. 01

We are curated, not crowdsourced.

Every business listed here was chosen by our editors — not pay-to-play, not algorithm-ranked, not voted on by strangers. When a reader sees you on OCE, they know an editor put you there. That is the most valuable piece of real estate in local advertising.

No. 02

The story sells, not the listing.

People don't book a table because they read a phone number. They book because they read a sentence that made them feel something. Our team writes the kind of sentences that move readers from scrolling to standing in your doorway on Friday at 7.

No. 03

The audience is local, the spend is real.

112,000 readers a month, 87% of them inside Orange County. They aren't comparing you to a Yelp page in Boise. They're deciding between you and the place two blocks away — and they're reading us to decide.

No. 04

Free is actually free.

No bait-and-switch. No hidden tier above Featured. No ads sneaking onto your page. The free listing is fully usable, forever, and the paid tiers exist for owners who want the editorial showcase — not because we held the basics hostage.

Pricing — built for owners

Three tiers. No annual contracts. No setup fees. Cancel any time. Editorial review required for Featured — most decisions inside two weeks.

Our editorial standards

We say no often. So a yes means something.

Orange County Explorer is curated. That means we read every application, visit every business in person before approving Featured, and decline more applications than we accept.

This isn't a directory that wants every business. It is a journal that wants the right ones. If you make our list, your readers — and your guests — will know exactly what that means.

01Independent or owner-operated. No franchises. No chains larger than four locations.
02A clear point of view — in the menu, the room, the product, the founder's story.
03Operating in Orange County for at least six months with a public storefront or address.
04Reviewed by an editor — every Verified and Featured listing is read and approved before going live.
How it works

From sign-up to showcase.

No. 01

Claim or create your listing

Search for your business, claim it if it's already on OCE, or add it from scratch. Free, two minutes, no credit card.

No. 02

Verify your email domain

We confirm ownership by sending a verification link to an email at your business domain — no extra paperwork or phone calls.

No. 03

Choose your tier

Stay free, upgrade to Verified instantly with a card, or apply for Featured if your business meets the editorial standard.

No. 04

Live within hours

Free and Verified go live as soon as you publish. Featured profiles take roughly two weeks — we visit, photograph, and write.

An owner's view
"Within a month of being featured, we were getting three or four reservations a week from people who quoted the OCE blurb back to us when they sat down."

Questions, answered

Things owners actually ask.

01How is OCE different from Yelp or Google?+
Yelp and Google are search engines — they list every business, ranked by reviews and signals. OCE is a curated journal — every business listed here has been chosen by an editor. Readers come to us specifically because they trust the curation, not because they typed in a search. The two work well together: OCE drives high-intent local readers; Google drives broad search traffic.
02What if my business isn't accepted for Featured?+
No problem — your Verified or Free listing isn't affected. Featured is application-only because we cap it at roughly 10% of paying members to preserve the curation. If we decline, we'll tell you why and what would change our minds. Many businesses re-apply six to twelve months later and are accepted.
03Can I cancel anytime?+
Yes — every paid tier is month-to-month with no contract. Cancel from your dashboard and your listing reverts to Free. You keep your spot on OCE, your reviews stay, your Google Maps pin stays. You only lose the paid features.
04How do you verify I own the business?+
We send a one-time verification link to an email at your business domain (e.g. marco@lidobottleworks.com). Click it once and you're verified for life. If your business doesn't have a custom domain, we accept business-listing-verified Google Business Profile ownership as an alternative.
05Who writes the editorial profile for Featured?+
Our editorial team — currently led by Elena Marchetti, our editor-in-chief, who has covered OC food and culture for twelve years. We visit your business, talk with you for about an hour, photograph the room, and write a 300–600 word profile. You see it before it goes live and have full editorial approval — we never publish a word you haven't read.
06What happens if I want to upgrade or downgrade later?+
Upgrades happen instantly with prorated billing. Downgrades take effect at the end of your current billing period — you keep all paid features until then. If you downgrade from Featured to Verified, your editorial profile is archived (still readable on a unique URL) but no longer featured on city or category pages.
07Do you accept advertising or sponsored content?+
No third-party advertising on OCE — ever. The only "paid" placements are the Verified and Featured tiers themselves, and Featured listings are clearly identified as such. We don't accept money to publish a journal article, a list, or a recommendation. The editorial side and the listing side never trade money.
08What kinds of businesses are eligible?+
Independent restaurants, hotels, shops, galleries, cafes, wine bars, makers, studios, and service businesses with a public-facing storefront in Orange County. We currently don't list strictly online businesses, multi-level marketing companies, real-estate agents, financial advisors, or chains larger than four locations.
09Is OCE only for restaurants?+
No. About a third of our coverage is dining, and the rest is split across Stay, Shop, Maker, and Drink. We particularly love bookstores, ceramics studios, surf shops with heritage, neighborhood cafes, boutique hotels, and small-batch makers — but if your business has a clear point of view and a real story, we want to hear from you.
10How do I get started right now?+
Click View pricing, choose your tier, and sign up. Free listings are live in minutes. Verified is live the same day. Featured applications are reviewed within roughly two weeks — and we'll let you know exactly where you stand at every step.
